WHAT TERRANCE HAD TO SAY ABOUT THE JANITORIAL INDUSTRY AND WORKING AT ACCURATE

What brought you to this career? When our kids were young, I was a stay-at-home dad. My wife was a CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) for several years and worked for a home health care agency. Rather than paying extra out for childcare, I stayed home with our kids until they started kindergarten.

One day in 1999, we had a washing machine flood. The guy who came to extract the water owned and operated his business and was looking for help with his night shifts. Even though I had no experience, he trained me. He was in his mid 40s and had been doing all the work by himself for 10 years. Watching how much he loved his work and the way he built relationships with customers gave me a different perspective about this industry that was interesting, inviting, and attractive. I learned a lot from him. I had also worked nights at Kinkos and would watch the monthly carpet cleaning. Until you get into the industry, you don't really realize what it takes; you don't have a true understanding and respect for the skill required.

What drew you to Accurate originally?

When I first started, working so closely with Ron and Rebecca, to see how approachable they were as owners and how active they were in the field—that motivated me. There were no stupid questions. We went to Flagstaff to start a new account, and we stayed in an Airbnb for a week. That experience gave me a lot of respect for them and what they are building. They lead by example. They’re not going to send us out to do something that can’t be done; they set us up for success.

What keeps you motivated at work?

Everybody around me is very professional, and just to keep up with them pushes me. Between me and my teammates, we’re going to knock it out of the park.

What's your WHY for being a cleaning industry professional?  I’m kind of an instant gratification junkie, and floor care checks that box every time. I go in, see a floor that needs help, and I get to bring it back to life. The results are immediate. Most janitorial cleaners are happy to see us because we take a load off their shoulders—even when they’re doing everything right, if the floors aren’t up to standard, that’s all anyone notices. I did residential carpet cleaning for 4-5 years in the past. Same thing; beautifying someone's home or other space. A clean floor makes the room.

I don’t like to sit in one place for eight hours. I like the variety of different buildings, being more active, different people and settings. A different type of job would have to be very exciting to keep my spark engaged.

Describe your fellow Accurate team members in three words.

Motivated, full of integrity, and dedicated.

Terrance has the utmost respect for fellow floor tech and past Employee Spotlight winner Rodrigo Palacios, whom he nicknamed "Rodzilla."

Which team member do you admire most at Accurate? I work often with Rodrigo Palacios—I call him Rodzilla. I’m over here puffing and sweating through three shirts, and he’s barely cracked a sweat, just smiling at me. We don’t talk much—less said, best said. We have a great rhythm, leapfrogging each other on jobs. He’s always level-headed, and I’ve learned from him to take the emotion out of things and focus on the end result over the reaction.

Which of Accurate’s core values resonates most with you, and why? (We Keep Our Word, Opportunity, Respect, Solutions, Keep It Fun) Teamwork through "We Keep Our Word." We all have each other’s backs. If someone comes in and sees the floor looks bad, they don’t say the floor guys did a bad job, they say Accurate did a bad job. Everyone carries their weight and responsibilities. "Keep It Fun" is also important.

What makes you proud of being an Accurate team member? Knowing how invested Ron and Rebecca are in the company. The culture of excellence and getting it done. Every different cleaning team is committed to getting the job done. I feel like when I raise my game, that is celebrated and encouraged. Even when no one is looking, everyone is doing their best. I’ve never seen anyone openly trying to cut corners.

I’ve worked for companies that were more profit-oriented over service, just trying to get more done for a larger profit. Ron is really big on integrity; it’s good to instead see people as our goal and as a whole feels better. I like to give 100%, so if everyone else isn't going to, why should I? What are we doing?

WHAT TERRANCE SHARED ABOUT HIMSELF

What's something unique about you? I like to throw darts. In 2008, I was the victim of an attempted carjacking and was shot in the stomach. My injuries required major surgery, and the doctor told me I needed to stay active and keep my core strength up. At that time, a friend introduced me to darts as a way to help with my recovery—getting me up, moving, and staying active. The more I played, the more I enjoyed it.

Soon after, I moved to Arizona. When I got there, I looked up local dart leagues and got involved. As an only child, I was somewhat sheltered and less outspoken, but this activity gave me confidence and helped me meet new people, which was eye-opening and refreshing. I would even say darts saved my life. It doesn’t look very difficult, but once you practice and put in the time, you can get better and master it—it’s fun. That gave me the impetus to keep going. It empowered me. I still play now that I’m back in Vegas. I work more nights, so I don’t get to do it as often, but there’s even a website where you can turn on your webcam and play with people remotely. It’s a great way to build connection.

How do you define success?

To follow the formula, work the system. When something has already been established that works, success is being able to follow that and make it happen. It means showing that you’re a team player, understanding your job, and respecting the process. The people who set things up in advance did so for a reason, and trusting that system shows respect—not just to them, but to yourself. It’s a family concept—using what you’ve been taught and getting it done.

What piece of advice would you give to your younger self? Take school more seriously and go further in academics. My mom was a young mom—she had me at 16. I couldn’t wait to finish school and move on to being an adult, not realizing how important a good education is for having options and choices later. Back then, I thought, “Why would you want to go to college? Why would you torture yourself like that?” Now, I see it differently.

What is your greatest accomplishment? What are you most proud of in your life? My family—raising my kids and being with them one-on-one in their early years. By the time they got to kindergarten, they already knew a lot, and watching them grow into great, well-rounded people has been my greatest joy. Their teachers always complimented their manners and work ethic, which felt like a pat on the back for us as parents. I don’t want to be responsible for raising a burden to society.

You're happiest when ______ (fill in the blank). When I come up with a plan and successfully execute it from start to finish.

June 15, 1991: The Mount Pinatubo eruption devastated the Philippines—847 dead, 20k evacuated, 10k left homeless. Terrance was there, living with his father on a military base.

Tell us about your family.

I was the oldest child but essentially grew up as an only child after my parents divorced and remarried. My mom had four more kids, and my dad had three. He was in the Air Force, and I lived with my mom until I was 10 before moving to the Philippines with him. We were there in 1991 when Mount Pinatubo erupted—the year before I graduated high school. After the Air Force chose not to renew the base lease, we were transferred to Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas in 1992. When my dad retired, he became a consultant for the TSA.

My wife E'Lynn and I are about to celebrate 23 years of marriage! She’s the younger of two and loves being around people, while for me, silence is golden. We have two kids—our son is in Corvallis, Oregon, studying to become an electrician. Growing up, he was my helper at Accurate, where he learned the rewards (and challenges) of hard work. His work ethic was quickly recognized when he joined ServiceMaster, earning him early responsibilities that he now appreciates. Our daughter lives nearby in Las Vegas with her two sons.

My grandkids are Matthew Jr. and Cameron James—also known as "Tornado and Hurricane, the Tag Team Champions of the World!" Being part of their lives brings me a lot of joy.

What is your #1 pet peeve?

Wasting time. You can spend my money, but please do not waste my time—I cannot get my time back. I think it’s important to teach our kids that because not enough people seem to have an awareness of it.

What career were you interested in as a kid?

For awhile, I wanted to join the Air Force because I didn’t live with my dad, and I thought that would be a way to follow in his footsteps. But then I got interested in jet engines—I wanted to work on them, to have access to that kind of technology. I’ve always been fascinated by how mechanical things work. Over time, it became less about military service and more about mechanical ability. If I can’t fix it, I definitely know how to break it more!

What was your first job?

I lived on a military base in the Philippines. They had a summer hire program, and the first job I ever worked at was at the jet engine shop. I used to go in for four hours a day, earning a small hourly wage, and clean up the shop. That was what I originally wanted to do after high school—become a jet engine mechanic.

What skill do you think everyone should learn?

Effective communication. Engaging with people, talking, exchanging ideas, and conversation skills. I come across a lot of people—bosses and supervisors—who have a gruff tone and aren’t approachable. If they had a different demeanor, they might get a different response. Conflict resolution is hard, and our pride gets in the way. We're always trying to teach our grandkids about this.

What do you like to do when you're not working?

I have a wide spectrum of interests, so I’m never bored. I can turn on the TV and always find something to watch. I’m a sponge for new information and watch YouTube videos. I have music playing everywhere—rap, reggae, or jazz. Honestly, I listen to music more than I listen to people. I enjoy my own company and my own interests.

Terrance's passion for retro 80s/90s sound systems is as much about tunes as it is about mechanical ability. "If I can't fix it, I definitely know how to break it more!" he jokes.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life, who would you want to play you? Sidney Poitier. He has a level of intellect that I try to exude myself. He’s intentional, and that resonates through everything he does.

Do you collect anything? Bob Marley memorabilia… t-shirts, posters, rare recordings, all over it. And retro sound systems, component systems from the 80s and 90s. I have a full stereo system in each room.

What topic could you give a 20-minute presentation on without any preparation? Cleaning carpets and performing floor care. My dad used to say, “You don’t talk much, but when you start talking about floors, I can’t get you to shut up.” If I don’t know about something, I prefer to listen—but when it comes to floor care, I can talk all day.

If cost was not a factor, where would you like to travel?

Europe—specifically Amsterdam and Sweden. I’m not a fan of cold weather, but I’d visit. I’m a history and geography nerd—I can stare at a map for hours, thinking about how history influenced where we are today.

You have your own late-night talk show. Who do you invite as your first guest?

In a perfect world, I’d invite Donald Trump—uncensored. I’d want to know what’s really on his mind, the things he won’t say on camera. What’s his end game? How does he get away with it? Where does he get the nerve? I’d want a truly candid, no-BS conversation.

If you could see one thing achieved in the world, what would it be? Universal peace, brotherhood, unity, and acceptance—people respecting each other.

If you were an animal, what would you be?

An octopus or a dolphin. Their intelligence and adaptability are incredible. Evolution has made them extraordinary.

Thank you, Terrance, for being a highly valued team member and an inspiration! We are so glad you’re part of The Accurate Family.
