WHAT STEVEN HAD TO SAY ABOUT THE JANITORIAL INDUSTRY AND WORKING AT ACCURATE
What brought you to the cleaning industry? I work at a motorcycle warehouse overnight and was looking for a second job. I’d never done janitorial work before. Accurate was the first company I applied to that called back. I like new experiences and learning new things, and I could start entry level and learn as much as possible. You have to deal with a whole lot of different personalities in this type of work; it’s fascinating.
What keeps you motivated at work? I'm the type of person who finds it easy to stay focused when accuracy is a priority (doing things correctly). I'm also a person who likes to stay busy. The nature of the work and its requirements really suit me. It’s like cleaning your house– something that has to be done, and you might as well do it right. I'm accomplishing my goals for having a second job: I need extra money to do x, y, and z, and it’s meeting those needs for me.
What skill do you think everyone should learn? People skills. Knowing how to communicate effectively with other people no matter the differences between you. It takes time and practice. It took me a long time to just be present, listen, and communicate in the best, most honest way possible.
What is one thing you wish people knew about your job? You have to try to understand other people. How they think about things may be different than yourself. Managing expectations is important.
What's kept you at Accurate for the past 2.5 years? It's a great second job. I can make the extra money I need here; I’ve been able to achieve my goal. Also, the schedule allows me to devote time to some important personal projects. My uncle is becoming a pastor, and I have family members who own some properties. I can help them all out with a lot of their needs.
What's the most important career lesson you've learned so far? Mind my own business and keep doing my job. Whether it’s real or fiction, sometimes there is work drama and far-fetched stories, but later you come to find out it’s not all what it seemed... so I keep on a straight line, from A-to-B.
What makes you proud of being an Accurate team member? They listen to their employees and are open to hearing concerns. I like that; a lot of places, that doesn’t happen.
Which of Accurate's core values is most important to you, and why? (We Keep Our Word, Respect, Opportunity, Solutions, and Keep It Fun) We Keep Our Word. The company leadership keeps their word, and that’s a big thing. When I have conversations with them, and they tell me things, I make plans and take action based on what they tell me. I have been able to rely on their word without too much shifting or stress.
WHAT STEVEN SHARED ABOUT HIMSELF
How do you define success? A successful person is someone who has goals, dreams, and values—whether it’s little or big, that they act on it, move towards something for themselves, and try to accomplish it. Taking action to live on purpose and with intention; getting traction and holding yourself accountable. Riding the waves of the ups and downs of life with a good attitude.
Do you have any additional career goals? I’m working on obtaining my CDL to drive semi trucks (major transport) in the next couple of months. That’s my next step.
What do you like to do in your free time? I go to the gym regularly and work out. I'm also involved with my uncle’s ministry and non-profit organization. We did a back-to-school event this year, and now we're getting ready for Thanksgiving and a coat giveaway. He’s big on giving back to people and is starting his own church.
What job did you want to have when you were a kid? A professional football player. I played defensive tackle.
What piece of advice would you give to your younger self?
Save your money.
Spend more time with friends and family; that’s important.
Where would you like to travel or vacation? Spain, France, or Italy (somewhere far). I’ve never been there and want to experience a different culture. I’ve been to Africa and Canada, but never to Europe.
What are you most proud of in your life? My kids. They’re the total opposite of me when I was a kid, and that’s a good thing! They look at life how they’re supposed to. Instead of being influenced by their environment and others around them, they’re on the straight path.
If Hollywood made a movie about your life, who would you like to see cast as you?
Dave Chapelle
What is your #1 pet peeve?
Untidiness/messiness. Keep your area clean and pick up after yourself.
You're happiest when _______ (fill in the blank).
I'm by myself. I enjoy my own company, and I’m content.
What's the most important thing you've learned in the last 3 years? Look in the mirror at yourself; take time for self reflection. Some people are so caught up in what they’re doing that they don’t really see or know themselves. Evaluate yourself so you can grow. A lot of people don’t take time for that or even understand that. I think I’ve learned more about myself the last couple years living in Las Vegas than at any other time in my life.
Are you a pet person? I live with my two dogs. One is a Husky/German Shepherd mix who is a year old, and the other is a 6-month-old German Shepherd.
What’s your favorite holiday?
Thanksgiving—a lot of eating, a lot of people getting together, unwinding, and relaxing.
If given a chance, who would you be for one day? The President of the United States... just to see how someone in that type of position goes through the day, what those conversations are like.
What was the first thing you bought with your own money? As a teenager, I bought a 1996 or 1997 Jaguar. It was my first car.
What’s one thing on your bucket list?
Learning how to swim as an athlete/competitively. I do know enough to not drown. 😉
If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
Be invisible. I would just go about my regular day, all over the place.
Thank you, STEVEN, for being a highly valued team member and an inspiration! We are so glad you’re part of The Accurate Family.
